SHAWYER TO TEST HIMSELF IN ASIAN FORMULA RENAULT
Formula Renault BARC front-runner Matt Shawyer (Wheathampstead, Herts) will travel to China next month to enter the Asian Formula Renault Challenge event at Zhuhai International circuit. He has signed a race-by-race deal with Champ Motorsport and will make his debut in rounds five and six on 26th-28th May.
The 23-year-old, who finished second in the opening round of the Formula Renault BARC Championship at Silverstone National on Saturday, 22nd April, is hoping the move will provide him with a different challenge to the one faced in the UK. If his first taste of racing in the Far East is successful he has the option to return for the remaining rounds, which include two races at the Sepang F1 circuit, Malaysia and two races at the famous Macau street circuit.
Shawyer is entering his second season of Formula Renault racing having competed in the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship in 2005 with RSR Engineering. Although he has missed four rounds of the Asian series, which uses the same FR2.0 cars as the UK Championship, he believes the experience will enhance his career.
