HOLDEN V8 TEAMS UNDERTAKE AFL-LIKE TRADE IN SANDOWN / BATHURST ENDURO DRIVER SWAP

Paul Weel to rejoin Supercheap Auto Racing, while Owen Kelly heads to Tasman Motorsport alongside Mark Noske

TOP-LINE Holden V8 Supercar teams Supercheap Auto Racing and Tasman Motorsport have undertaken an AFL-like trade for this year’s Sandown and Bathurst endurance classics.

Supercheap Auto Racing co-owner Paul Weel, who retired from full-time driving at the end of last season to devote more time to his rapidly expanding PWR Performance Products business, had been in discussions with Tasman to join it for the two endurance races and looked likely to sign for the team this week.

But a potential for team grouping issues and sponsorship clashes has meant that rather than accept the offer, Weel will now rejoin his own team while Owen Kelly, who drove for Supercheap Auto Racing in 2005 and was under contract, will switch to Tasman.

Weel will now partner Nathan Pretty in the #50 SCAR Commodore, while Kelly will slip alongside Mark Noske in the #23 Tasman Commodore.

Team regulars Jason Richards and Andrew Jones will spearhead Tasman’s assault in car #3, while Supercheap Auto Racing stars Greg Murphy and Cameron McConville will drive together in the #51 Commodore.

An experienced V8 Supercar driver, Kelly has six Bathurst 1000 starts with a best finish of sixth place with Pretty last year.

Noske, like Kelly also a former Holden Young Lion, last year drove for the HSV Dealer Team at Sandown and Bathurst. With nine Bathurst 1000 starts to his credit, his best finish of sixth came with Todd Kelly in an HYL Commodore in 1999.

Both will sample their endurance mount for the first time at a team test day at Winton in Victoria later in the year.
