THOMPSON WINS BTCC ROUND 1 AT BRANDS HATCH

James Thompson has won the first round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, Kent.

Thompson (Harrogate) overtook fellow Briton Tom Chilton (Reigate) in the closing stages to win on his return to the BTCC. His victory also signals a win for SEAT’s new Leon model on its BTCC debut.

Chilton, who had started from pole position and set a new race lap record in his Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch, finished second ahead of reigning Champion Matt Neal (Droitwich) who moved through from a lowly starting position of 15th in his Team Halfords Honda.

Two of the favourites, SEAT’s Jason Plato (Oxford) and Vauxhall’s Fabrizio Giovanardi, both retired with crash damage to their cars.
