Double points finish for Ireland in Laguna Seca
Laguna Seca, USA, 12th March 2006: Ralph Firman survived no fewer than three collisions during the Sprint and Feature races to score 5th and 6th placed finishes in the USA A1 Grand Prix in Laguna Seca, California. The A1 Team Ireland car was hit from behind by the Czech Republic after braking to avoid a spinning New Zealand in the Sprint race but recovered to finish 5th. The damage caused by the incident included the rear floor and lower rear wing but the pit crew carried out repairs prior to the Feature event.
The Feature race saw Firman opt for an early pit stop on lap 2, but a sticking front right wheel nut delayed him rejoining the race for valuable seconds and he dropped to 11th. Then began a recovery which saw him overtake the Czech Republic and fend off the A1 Team USA car of Bryan Herta, and with France retiring, Lebanon pitting and New Zealand again spinning the Irish team claimed a solid 6th place. A total of 11 Championship Points means A1 Team Ireland is now 8th in the A1GP series going into the final round in Shanghai, China.
