FERRARI TAKES AUSTRALIAN GT WIN AFTER BATTLE ROYALE AT WAKEFIELD PARK
Allan Simonsen and Greg Crick have shared the spoils after a remarkable day of competition in round 1 of the 2006 Speed Energy Drink Australian GT Championship at Wakefield Park Raceway.
The two drivers were features at the front of the field in all three of yesterday’s 18-lap races at the demanding 2.2km Goulburn circuit, Simonsen scoring a pair of victories to Crick’s sole race win to give Ferrari the first bragging rights this season.
Chrysler and Porsche completed the top three, a clear indication of the level of competition in the field this season. 24 cars representing six manufacturers started each race Sunday, a record field for the championship as it begins its second season.
For Simonsen, the win came after only confirming his participation in the event Saturday morning, the Danish GT ace drawing on all his experience to muscle the Consolidated Chemical Ferrari 360GT past the Crick’s Viper with just a few laps remaining in the morning’s opening race.
Third place in the second heat kept the points ticking over, whilst a dominating victory over the Porsche of Bryce Washington in the finale’ rounded off a remarkable day for the former V8 Ute and British GT championship driver.
