CONTINUING QUALIFYING FORM FOR RYAN
Not only did David Ryan win the opening race of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, he also took the laurels for being the first winner of the fledging CAMS National Racing Championships.
Ryan missed the start slightly but led the 17-car field to the first corner. Driving a Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo, he opened up a handy leading margin in the first couple of laps - but that edge wore away over the remainder.
Drew Russell’s less powerful but much lighter Honda S2000 was shuffled to fourth in the opening battle for the minors, but once past the John Houlder Falcon XR8 and Nick Dunkley’s XR6 Turbo, Russell narrowed the gap to Ryan.
By the final lap they were nose-to-tail and Russell nearly pulled off a remarkable around the outside pass at the fishhook corner. But Ryan held him out to the finish flag.
