CONTINUING QUALIFYING FORM FOR RYAN

There may be new faces and new cars at the opening round of the 2006 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, but it was the familiar combinations that set the pace throughout qualifying at Wakefield Park on Saturday March 4, 2006

One very familiar with posting pole positions in 2005 was David Ryan = and he kicked off the new season with another one, aboard his Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo with a best of 1 min 10.8325 second lap.

Just over two tenths slower was the nimble Honda S2000 of youngster Drew Russell while Nick Dunkley filled third in another Turbo Falcon edging out the V8 Ford variant of John Houlder.

In fifth was Leigh Mertens in Class A for the first time, driving the ex-Scot Anderson VZ Holden Commodore after campaigning a Proton Satria in Class C previously.

The first of the Class B cars was next with reigning Shannons Australian Production Car Champion Colin Osborne just ahead of Toyota Celica team mate Ric Shaw and the new VW Golf of Kosi Kalaitzidis.

Steve Briffa was next, another stepping up to a Class A Commodore (from a Class B Celica) from V8 Falcon of Chris Delfsma. Allan Shephard would have been next but blew the engine of his Celica after recording the eleventh best time.

The four cars on the grid for the race one are from the Trophy Class (for cars that are no longer eligible for A, B or C due to their age) with Adam Beechey’s Honda Integra ahead of Stuart Riach in a BMW and the Toyota MR2 team cars of Phil Alexander and Trevor Keene.

At the back of the field is the three Class C cars with the Ford Focus of Darren Best showing the way to Lauren Grey’s Toyota Echo Sportivo and the Satria of Queenslander Darren Harris.

Round one of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship will be contested over three races. The first held later today is a scratch event while Sunday’s two will be handicapped with the slower classes starting ahead of the others.
