Smashing racing was the order of the day at Valencia this afternoon for round 17 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, when Yokohama helped Alfa Romeo driver Augusto Farfus convert yesterday’s pole position into a formidable race win.
Farfus lost the lead on lap one to the SEAT of Jordi Gené. The Spaniard’s performance was later explained as he was called to serve a drive-through penalty for jumping the start.
Having regained the front, the Brazilian did well to stay out of
trouble as the world’s best touring car drivers put on one of the most
closely fought races to date in front of a 59,000-strong crowd.
Proteam Motorsport’s Luca Rangoni delivered an outstanding performance
in the Yokohama Independents’ Trophy and finished second overall, first
in his class ahead of JAS Motorsport driver Pierre-Yves Corthals and GR
Asia’s Tom Coronel.
Chevrolet driver Nicola Larini drove from sixth to claim third place overall.
Round 18 was equally thrilling, with Jörg Müller taking the day’s
second win in his BMW, closely followed by team-mate Duncan Huisman.
Luca Rangoni once again claimed maximum points in the Yokohama Independents’ Trophy, finishing third overall.
Reigning champion Andy Priaulx scored only one point throughout the
weekend, having retired from race one and finishing race two in eighth
place. He is now second in this year’s championship with Augusto Farfus
in the lead.
Augusto Farfus Jr, N.Technology: "The tyres worked really well
with the car as we thought they would. They were consistent and made it
really nice to manage the car. Perfect."
Jörg Müller, BMW Team Germany: "I was surprised to be so
competitive with 50kg of ballast. I waited for Duncan to make a mistake
and saved my tyres ready to go through and it worked!"
Kazuyoshi Sekiguchi, Yokohama Europe Marketing Manager: "Today’s
racing was extremely close, with wins going to both front and
rear-wheel-drive cars which really shows how even the ADVANs are across
the field. It is still good to hear such positive feedback from the
drivers."
