IN FORTY YEARS of Formula Vee competition across Australia, A South Australian driver had never tasted success in the prestigious and competitive Victorian series.
That was all until Adelaidian Asher Johnston wrapped up the 2005 Victorian State Series Vee title at Sandown raceway last Tuesday, scoring his first racing car championship with a consistent performance on Melbourne Cup day.
And just like South Australian based Horse trainer Tony Santic, who brought Victoria’s premier Horse Racing trophy back to South Australia on Tuesday, a racing trophy of a different kind was also on its way to South Australia on the same day thanks to Johnston’s title.
Asher’s series’ win came after a season of strong outright performances throughout a Victorian State Series’ schedule that featured close and furious action all season long.
And after scoring a pair of wins at the tricky Sandown circuit in suburban Melbourne late July, the Knowledge Plus team had every reason to be confident heading into the championship decider one day meeting, needing only to finish consistently in each race to seal the championship.
Qualifying third was a good start, despite the driver believing there was the potential to start from pole position.
