Renault Sport UK has confirmed an upgraded bodykit will be implemented on its Formula Renault 2.0 car for the 2007 Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship season. The new styling hints strongly at the design of Renault F1 Team’s R26, offering an exciting new element to the series as it enters its 18th year.
It is the first design change since 2004 when a revised aerodynamic package was added to the car, originally launched in 2000. The upgrade kit, which will be available from February 2007, will enhance the look of the car with F1-style ‘chimneys’ on the sidepods, sculpted nose, new front wing and augmented
rear diffuser. Underneath, the car has a new, sleeker profile.
Reliability is a hallmark of the Formula Renault 2.0 and a key priority
in ensuring it retains its place as a prestigious breeding ground for
single-seater racers. Engineers at Renault Sport Technologies in Dieppe
have opted to maintain current levels of performance, while bringing
the aesthetics of the car in line with the cutting edge technology
found in Formula One. This will appeal to drivers and potential
sponsors as they take their first steps on the global motorsport career
ladder.
Key components of the car including the carbon-fibre tub – the
incredibly strong central cockpit that surrounds the driver – chassis
and suspension remain unchanged.
Renault UK’s Motorsport Manager Tim Jackson commented: “This evolution
of the Formula Renault 2.0 is another exciting development for our
Championship and the stunning appearance of the new car can only
enhance its appeal. I expect our drivers will enjoy racing a car that
bears resemblance to a Formula One car, as this is where many of them
see their future careers.
“Renault UK has a proud history of motorsport in the UK with more than
30 years of unbroken commitment to the sport. Innovations such as this
enable us to keep the Championship at the forefront of ambitious
drivers’ priorities and help them to refine their racing skills as they
begin their careers.”
The new bodykit will not be immediately used in the Formula Renault
BARC Championship, with teams and drivers in the low-cost feeder series
to Formula Renault UK retaining the current Formula Renault 2.0 for one
more year. The plan is for the Formula Renault BARC Championship to
adopt the upgrade kit in 2008.
