CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS UPSTAGED
Not no regular production car racer Steve Briffa has won the sixth round of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Oran Park. Briffa cemented the victory by winning the last of three races, following up on his win earlier in the day.

As he had then, Briffa steered his Class B Toyota Celica through the dicing Class C cars which started 22 seconds earlier to be a comfortable winner in the second of the handicap events.

In the meantime Colin Osborne (Celica) who has already won Class B honours for the year, is in the box seat to win the championship overall, needing only four points at Eastern Creek’s final round in early December to collected the crown.

Class A honours came to Leigh Mertens (Proton Satria) after having succeeded a hard fought tussle with class leader Daniel Natoli (Satria) and the Citroen Xsara of Dane Rudolph, as well as finishing second outright and ahead of the closing Allan Shepherd.

The result for the latter in his Honda Integra gave the Thrifty Car Rental team a one-three in two races as well as overall. Fourth was the fast-finishing David Ryan in his Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo that had been excluded from race two for overboosting.

Osborne was next from Natoli, Rudolph, Trevor Keene (Celica), the XR8 of John Houlder, and Veijo Phillips and Nick Dunkley in XR6 Turbos.

Drew Russell’s chances of becoming the youngest ever national champion plummeted after the Honda S2000 split its differiental in race two. They effected repairs but the engine had a high end miss for the duration as he battled the Falcons of Phillips and Dunkley who both finished ahead.

After Russell came Phil Alexander who was very competitive in the MR2, dicing with Keene for a number of laps. Gray (Toyota Echo Sportivo) also tagged the Class C runners for numerous laps and finished ahead of Sam Silvestro in the second MR2.
