CLASS WIN AND SOLID HAUL OF POINTS FOR RUSSELL AT PHILLIP ISLAND
It was a case of mission accomplished for Global Racing Industries driver Drew Russell in round five of the 2005 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Phillip Island Raceway, Victoria on August 20-21.
Consistency, with a view to consolidating his position at the top end of the series’ point-scores, was the name of the game for the 17 year-old, who entered the weekend second in both the Class A and outright standings.
Outright podium finishes in all three races, including a perfectly timed win in the final, recording the fastest lap of the race in all three races, and taking the weekend class win was just what the doctor ordered.
The weekend started strongly in the twenty minute practice on Saturday morning. Having his first race weekend at the daunting 4.45km circuit, Russell steered the Go Karts Go Honda S2000 to the top of the timesheets, with a fastest time of 1:54.3031 and an impressive average speed of 140km/hr aboard what is essentially a road car.
In qualifying, the Newcastle-based youngster continued his good form, securing a spot on the front row of the grid with a time of 1:54.3168.
