Leinster Trophy Car Races at Mondello Park 11th SEPTEMBER 2005

The Leinster Motor Club (LMC) is pleased to announce that the historic and highly prized Leinster Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Formula Ford 1600 race at Mondello Park on Sunday, 11th September. The race will also count as the deciding round of both the Southern and All Ireland Championships.
The Leinster Trophy was first awarded in 1934 to Miss Fay Taylor, and has been an integral part of the Irish racing calendar ever since. It has had a number of homes along the way including, Skerries, Tallaght, Wicklow, Dunboyne and Bishopscourt before finally taking permanent residence at Mondello Park in 1968. Previous winners of the prestigious trophy include Formula One World Champions, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Mike Hawthorn, five-time Grand Prix winner John Watson and former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan. Many top Irish drivers from Irish national racing have also laid claim to the trophy including Ken Fildes, Vivion Daly and more recently John O'Hara - who is currently competing for the Asian Formula Three title.

The Leinster Motor Club was founded in 1921 and is one of the premier motor clubs in Ireland. Along with hosting the British Touring Car Championship at Mondello, the club also runs the Leinster 100 and Leinster 200 motorbike events, bike trials (including the Patland Cup), car trials and an annual Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Rally.

Formula Ford 1600 originated back in 1967 and is one of the most successful
single-seater classes in motor racing history. Many grand prix drivers started off in Formula Ford and the class is enjoying a resurgence this year in Ireland with seven titles up for grabs, excellent grids and some ferociously competitive racing in both the Northern and Southern Championships. This year the LMC is hoping to attract most of the front running Irish and British drivers to the Leinster Trophy race.

Along with receiving the much coveted Leinster Trophy, the winner will be awarded a set of tyres by Alan Byrne and Ed Masson, Irish Agents for Avon Racing Tyres.

Other races on the day include Dunlop Supercars, FIAT Punto Abarth, FIAT Punto/Uno challenge and Formula Libre.
