Initially it was reigning champion Darren Hossack who audaciously ran side by side with the current series leader Ricciardello for a third of the first lap, snaring the lead but only briefly as the Saab/Chev expired with a broken throttle shaft.
Ricciardello assumed his customary role at the front in the Alfa/Chev but the Baily Nissan 300ZX/Chev was handily placed to take the fight up to the leader.
They were never more than a car length apart with Ricciardello taking the win. Dean Randle’s Saab/Chev was caught behind the Des Wall Chev Corvette for several laps, but once past, negated the gap to the front runners to be a close third.
After oil pressure problems sidelined the Pontiac Trans Am in race one, Jeff Barnes started off the back for fifth behind Wall who had to effect power steering repairs between races, and ahead of Phil Crompton who recovered well after an indiscretion on lap three.
The Ford Mustang finished ahead of Dean Camm’s Honda Prelude/Chev and the Holden Monaro of Michael Robinson while Trent Young’s Mazda again failed to go the distance, this the turbo charger expired.
