VICTORY at Bathurst is the sole focus on the minds of Holden’s V8 Supercar stars in October every year and 2006 is no different.
Aiming for an unprecedented eighth successive victory in the Supercheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst, Holden’s stars have gathered with the silverware from their past successes on the eve of another assault on Mount Panorama.
A streak that began in 1999 with victory by Greg Murphy and Steven Richards and that has continued right through to last year’s race won by Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly, the recordbreaking performance is the stuff of which other manufacturers can only dream.
“It’s been an incredible run so far and I certainly hope it continues,” said five-time Bathurst champion Skaife.
“It proves that the Holden teams have done a consistently good job over that period of time.”
Four teams – Wynn’s Racing, Garry Rogers Motorsport, Holden Racing Team
and Kmart Racing (now the Toll HSV Dealer Team) – have collected the
silverware in a range of Commodores, beginning with VT in 1999 and
2000, VX in 2001 and 2002, VY in 2003 and 2004, and VZ in 2005.
Holden will farewell the current chassis platform this year with the new VE Commodore to arrive in V8 Supercar racing in 2007.
Pictured from left to right and their years of victories in brackets
are: Todd Kelly (2005), Mark Skaife (2001, 2002 and 2005), Garth Tander
(2000), Steven Richards (1999), Greg Murphy (1999, 2003 and 2004), Jim
Richards (2002) and Rick Kelly (2003 and 2004).
The Kelly brothers will combine in the #15 Toll HSV Dealer Team
Commodore after finishing second in the recent Sandown 500, while
Skaife and Tander will pair up in the #2 HRT Commodore that dominated
Sandown but was delayed with a steering problem.
Richards Snr will team with Bathurst rookie Ryan Briscoe in the #22 HRT
Commodore, while son Steven will drive the #7 Jack Daniel’s Commodore
with Paul Dumbrell.
The fastest man around Bathurst in history, Greg Murphy, will pair with
Cameron McConville in the #51 Supercheap Auto Racing Commodore.
