Monkhouse Rally car destroyed in road accident.
AFTER putting in one of the best drives of his short rallying career in last weekend’s Safari Rally in Tasmania, Jack Monkhouse’s 2005 Globalstar Australian Rally Championship campaign suffered a major blow earlier this week when the team’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII was written off in a collision as the car was towed home from the event.
The incident occurred in the small township of Coomandook, approximately 20km East of Tailem Bend, when a large freight train slammed into the rear of the tow car and trailer that was transporting the Lancer back to the team’s Adelaide base. Fortunately Jack and father Bill escaped uninjured - despite the Rally Car, trailer and tow vehicle all being destroyed.
The car suffered major damage to the Right hand rear quarter, bending the chassis rails and destroying the rear suspension. The hit was severe enough to push the right-hand rear light as far forward as the C pillar and rear seat, meaning the car is essentially irreparable.
