Tasmanian Top five gives Monkhouse points boost. Saturday, July 10th: 2005; Safari Rally Tasmania: For Immediate Release
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Jack Monkhouse overcame a pair of punctures today to register a strong top ten finish in the second heat of the Subaru Safari Rally held this weekend in Tasmania, the third round of this year’s Globalstar Australian Rally Championship.
24-year-old Monkhouse and co driver Rebecca Cochrane took their Cochrane Rallysport Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII to a strong fifth overall for the weekend, backing up their fourth place scored in yesterday’s opening heat and giving the combination a strong points boost in both the outright GARC Championship as well as the privateers title points race.
Monkhouse’s only dramas today came on the 10.91km Edwards stage, the Lancer clipping a hidden rock and puncturing a tyre on this mornings second stage and slipping to 14th. Setting out on the comeback trail, Monkhouse responded with 7th quickest time on the following stage to begin his climb up the order, the combination working their way into a solid 10th place by the fourth trial of the day.
However, in a cruel piece of luck, the Lancer clipped the same rock on the repeat running of the Edwards stage in the afternoon again puncturing a tyre.
