The sixth round of the Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship at Oran Park on October 27-29 became another engrossing war between Ford Falcon AU drivers Queenslander Kris Walton and defending champ South Australia’s Bruce Heinrich.
The latter was the top qualifier, and headed race one until stepping out at Suttons, allowed the fast starting Scott Nicolas (AU) through. However Nicolas was deemed to have jumped to early and was ordered into the pits for a drive through penalty the next time around.
Heinrich then had Walton to contend with, and the latter soon found a way through, leading for several laps before Heinrich executed a clean move at turn two with two laps to go.
Walton was not done and charged past at turn four on the last circuit for victory. Brad Fox (AU) was next from Shawn Jamieson in the first of the Holden Commodore VT’s while Clint Harvey (AU) fought back to fifth after being knocked off the track by the AU of Rob Rubis.
Grant Johnson was expected to be a strong challenger but his VT threw a flywheel in practice. He qualified Malcolm Niall’s AU and finished sixth.
Johnson’s weekend was over early into the second race as contact with Peter Dane’s AU dropped him down the order before a broken third gear put the car into the pits and out for good.
Heinrich led the first half before Walton took over in another engrossing battle. Jamieson was next from Fox, Nicholas, Dane and Matt Lovell (Falcon EA). Harvey was third until a blown tyre put him out.
Fox made and excellent start in the third, but contact with Walton helped him into the turn two bunker and brought about the safety car. There was another, a lap into the restart when Mark Primmer (EA) went off in the esses.
Heinrich led until lap nine where again Walton slipped past for his third win while Nicholas finished third ahead of Jamieson, Dane, Lovell, Rubis, Harvey and the VT’s of John Goodacre and Jake Camilleri.
The final round of the Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship is at Eastern Creek in New South Wales from November 25-26. Heinrich is a already the new champions, backing up his 2005 title while the two runner up position will be fought out between fellow Falcon drivers Walton and 2004 champion Harvey with Jamieson’s Holden also in contention.
