With a handy lead going into the final round of the Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship at Eastern Creek this weekend, two times and current champion Bruce Heinrich is nearly home in securing a third title.
But there is no such thing as a dead certainty for any sort of slipup
brings the big improver of the year – Queenslander Kris Walton – right
into championship calculations. In a near season long rivalry, the
latter has gained the upper hand lately, albeit by the narrowest
margin. But its the South Australian Heinrich’s good results in the
early rounds of 2006 is what puts him in the position of power.
Heinrich has a forty-four point advantage, and with 120 points up for
grabs it is going to be a very exciting contest between the two Ford
Falcon AU drivers. They will also have to factor in 2004 champion Clint
Harvey and his Falcon AU from West Australia, and the SA Holden
Commodore VT of Shawn Jamieson who are vying for third in the series.
Local Falcon AU driver Peter Dane missed the opening couple of rounds
but a good result here could see him as high as fifth overall from his
present seventh and Queenslander Jack Camilleri can improve his stocks
aboard his Commodore VT.
The final round of the Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship has
an entry list of around twenty six cylinder Fords and Holdens. It’s the
smallest of the title chase in 2006 but probably the most competitive
of the season.
