Early championship for Zukanovic PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 November 2006
It’s only taken day one of the two day final round of the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup National Series for Marcus Zukanovic to scrub the 7 off his usual number 71 and turn it into a 1 – and the series championship in 2006.

It was the start of a busy weekend for Zukanovic, just as it had been at Phillip Island, in late August, where he would jump out of the V8 Ute and into the Commodore Cup racer.

"I've has some awesome rounds in Commodore Cup this year and it's a great race car to drive. In some ways, more of a racer than the v8 Ute but diversity is the way to go so I'm pleased I can have a crack at both titles this weekend.”

Zukanovic's departure to v8 Supercars signifies Commodore Cup as a stong feeder category. "Everyone seems to be on the move to Supercars and that now opens the door behind for fresh blood to take our places,” he alluded to as previous champion Geoff Emery races in the Development Series and former Commodore Cup racer Lee Holdsworth contests the V8 Supercar championship.

Zukanovic started Eastern Creek’s race one from the outside of the front row as pole sitter Brett Holdsworth was away slowly losing many places. Zukanovic took a lead he wouldn’t surrender for the entire nine lap journey, controlling the race despite an early safety car when tailender Michael Fairlie went astray at turn two.

As Holdsworth fell down the order with a sick sounding engine, second in the race and the series was Christian D’Agostin with team mate Geoff Fontaine holding onto third place despite losing second gear early in the race. Behind the second of the Axent cars there was a fierce dice for third place where Stephen White and Tony Bates were the initial combatants.

Bates was penalised with a drive through for passing before the line on the restart and White faded as those behind mounted pressure. Ultimately Michael Graham finished just ahead of Ashley Cooper and Daniel Richert.

White trailed the trio while Jason Domaschenz nailed David Gittus with a lap to go, the latter suffering the same fuel dramas as team mate Holdsworth who ultimately dropped to 14th behind tenth place Adam Lloyd in the first of the older VH models, Bates, Allan Hill and Chris Stevenson.
