Outright Supaloc Saloon Championship contenders Bruce Heinrich and Kris Walton both limped home in race one of the seventh and final round as Scott Nicolas posted his first win of the season in his Oki Ford Falcon AU at Eastern Creek yesterday. All three AU Fords vied for the lead but a puncture for Walton and a loose front hub for Heinrich made it a battle for survival for the only two contenders left in the series. Earlier in the day, Heinrich was the fastest qualifier ahead of Walton with Nicolas on the second row alongside Jake Camilleri in his Holden Commodore VT. South Australians Matt Lovell in an older EA model Ford, and Shawn Jamieson’s VT shared the next row ahead of the Fords of Peter Dane, Brett Carrington, Geoff Brown and Shane Smollen. Eleventh was Roger Paterson, a sturdy rebuilding effort at Peter Dane’s workshop after the AU suffered a huge crash in practice. Meanwhile round one winner John Goodacre was out after blowing a second engine in his VT. Michael Barbara also detonated an engine in his Holden Commodore VN and switched to Dane’s older EA Falcon which also lost an engine. Heinrich made a great start to lead Nicolas while Walton was slow away, dropping to fifth initially before charging back past Carrington firstly, then Lovell before closing on the race leaders. Nicolas found his way past Heinrich as did Walton who grabbed the lead near the halfway point. But it was short-lived glory as he blew a front tyre shortly after – forced to the pits to change and losing a lap in the process. Heinrich was also in trouble but opted to stay on the circuit and limp home. In the meantime Jamieson passed Lovell for what would become second in the end, and Carrington was fourth ahead of Paterson and Dane. SA Commodore driver Robert Lonie unassuming progressed to seventh ahead of fellow VT runner Paul Pennisi and the EA’s of Adam Hughes and Smollen. Then follow John Ierardo (Commodore VN) from Heinrich, David Rogers (VN), Mark Primmer (EA) and Walton. Jake Camilleri was an earlier retiree with gearbox woes and Geoff Brown’s AU was also a non-finisher.
