South Australian Bruce Heinrich overcame a race one, loose wheel hub to finish second in the final round second race and sure up the 2006 Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship. He then went onto to win the final race but it was Queenslander Scott Nicolas who won the round. It was all or nothing for nearest rival Kris Walton in race two of the final round as he too had dramas in race one. He would have to do it from position fifteen on the grid. Heinrich was a little better placed being a couple of rows ahead of the Queenslander. But it was all Nicolas from the start. He showed the way from Shawn Jamieson’s Commodore VT with Matt Lovell next in the EA and ahead of Roger Paterson. Walton stormed through the opening lap to be sixth, having passed Peter Dane’s AU at the start finish line while Heinrich was tenth behind Robert Lonie and Shane Smollen in their respective VT and EA. Walton was up to second by the fourth lap and closing on the race leader when an accelerator cable problem arose and cruelly put Walton out of the race – and more importantly, ended his championship aspirations. Heinrich was not about to settle for top five finish as he worked his way to second, although running out of time to do anything about wrestling the win away from Nicolas. Jamieson was fourth just in front of Paterson with Lonie next clear of a close finish between Dane and Geoff Brown’s AU. Adam Hughes steered his EA into ninth with Paul Pennisi’s VT completing the top ten. Lovell literally fell out of contention as his Ford suffered a spectacular rear end collapse nearing turn nine, and both the Dial Before You Dig Fords of Primmer and Rogers failed to go the distance. With the championship in the bag - his third, Heinrich could go all out in the third and final race of the season. He anticipated a head to head battle with Nicolas as the pair shared the front row, also reminding the newly crowned Saloon Car king that his AU had just been sold and shouldn’t be sold. In keeping with those jests, Heinrich jetted off the line at the start was never seriously challenged. Nicolas’ main aim was to win his race for second with fellow Queensland state resident Walton who barnstormed his way third in no time flat. The pair engaged in a lengthy battle for third as Nicolas refused to concede. In the end Walton did gain the ascendancy but not by much. With Jamieson falling by the wayside in the second half of the race, Carrington was able to withstand Paterson’s advances while Lonie secured sixth clear of Brown. Brown vigorously challenged Dane until the latter pulled out with a mechanical ailment. Lovell was traveling well after his earlier drama but the older EA failed slowed leaving Hughes to be the best of the EA’s just ahead of Smollen as Pennisi filled tenth. Lovell limped home next while Rogers was the last official finisher as the race took its toll.
