DARE SHOT supported drivers James and Theo Koundouris have finished third and fourth in the 2006 Australian GT Championship following the final round at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway last weekend.
Teaming up together to drive the #69 Dare Coffee Shot with Guarana Porsche GT3 Cup Car, James and Theo tackled two, one-hour races in overcast but warm conditions at the 3.9km Sydney circuit in the final round of the eight-event GT series for exotic supercars.
The pair, sharing the same car for the first time this season, produced strong performances all weekend long to cement their positions in the championship at the end of the weekend, capping off a strong year for both in the competitive series.
James Koundouris finished third in the championship – behind only Greg Crick and defending champ Bryce Washington – with 524.5 Points, whilst Brother Theo scored fourth (487 Points) despite missing the Phillip Island round earlier this year.
The two races in Sydney at the weekend produced all the drama usually associated with endurance racing, the Dare Shot supported Porsche working it’s way through various dramas to come out with a solid round result.
A strong fifth in the second race to gave the combination a top five round result – a solid end to a year that has witnessed the Koundouris brothers stand on the podium a combined four times this year.
2006 highlights include the Queensland Raceway round where James and Theo finished second and third, respectively, and a strong second for James in the rain at Phillip Island earlier this year.
Both said that the Eastern Creek round was a tough yet rewarding way to complete their first full year in the Australian GT Championship.
“I am happy to be third,” said James Koundouris.
“It is a tough championship with a lot of very good drivers so to be third at the end of the year is a good result.
“Unfortunately we had one or two rounds where we had some issues cost us a good result – at Phillip Island we had a tyre let go from the lead and we had a radiator hose cut at Bathurst – so when you consider Greg or Bryce finished every race it’s a result to be happy with.” He said.
“It was a tough weekend at Eastern Creek,” Theo Koundouris said.
“It was pretty competitive out there on the track but we’ve been able to bring the car home in one piece which is great.
“I have enjoyed the year. I missed a round earlier on which hurt me in the championship but it’s been good fun. There are some good guys in this championship to race and it’s been very competitive.” He said.
The Dare Shots team would like to thank the continued support of Dare Shots, Supabarn Supermarket and all of the team’s 2006 sponsors.
