2006 Ebanc Trade Australian Commodore Cup - Round Eight PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 November 2006

After Marcus Zukanovic secured the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup National Series by winning the first of the eighth round three races at Eastern Creek, he went on with the job, taking out the last round for 2006. Christian D'Agostin secured second in the series while third became a four-way tussle that went down to the wire.

The second of three races ended prematurely when Denis Pana's VS Commodore burst into flames shortly after half distance. The cabin was engulfed by fire which was suspected to have been trigged by oil from a blown gearbox becoming ignited.

Immediately Pana escaped the flame and fume filled cabin he laid prone on the ground, sparking immediate concerns for his welfare. But he was soon attended by medical staff and was diagnosed okay after receiving oxygen.

The race had gone under safety car conditions during the drama and was red flagged on lap seven with D'Agostin taking the win after beating new Zukanovic off the line and narrowly holding the advantage until the red flag.

D'Agostin team mate Geoff Fontaine was third in the early part before Daniel Richert found a way past. The pair was closely followed by the duelling Michael Graham and Stephen White with a gap to Ashley Cooper.

David Gittus' chances of leaving the series with a third place overall received a more than a dent when he was caught up in a second corner (on the opening lap) tangle with Adam Lloyd and Brett Holdsworth.

Lloyd was out on the spot, Holdsworth continued while Gittus was eventually summoned to the pits to effect repairs.

D'Agostin led the third and final race of the season until Zukanovic executed a precision move in the breaking area at turn two on lap three.

A miscue at turn three a couple of laps later by the initial race leader, allowed the hotly pursuing Fontaine and Graham through. Bates was also able to get by but D'Agostin won fourth back with a lap to go.

Bates was right behind at the end and just ahead of Holdsworth who secured third by the barest of margins and clear of series Gittus. Lloyd was eighth and the first of the VH's, just ahead of rivals Allan Hill and Chris Stevenson.
