Jeff Grech appointed to management advisory role, construction of new VE Commodores underway
The man who guided the Holden Racing Team to six V8 Supercar Championships in seven years, Jeff Grech, has been appointed to a senior consultancy role within Supercheap Auto Racing, effective immediately.
Grech’s appointment comes after what promised to be a strong year on-track in 2006 had not been realised, with Cameron McConville and Greg Murphy currently sitting 15th and 25th respectively in the driver standings.
The team’s season has been hampered by five major accidents at four of the 12 rounds to date - Adelaide (x2), Pukekohe, Bathurst and Symmons Plains.
Team owner Kees Weel said Grech’s appointment was made as a commitment to rebuilding the team.
“After three major accidents at the opening two rounds of the
championship, a decision was made to begin looking to the future and we
have been clearly focussed on that ever since,” Weel said.
“A major part of that was the decision to design and build three new VE
Commodores for the 2007 season, and we contracted Dencar to complete
the task in-house. The build process for the first two of those cars is
well and truly underway.
“While the new cars will go a long way towards improving our
performance, further changes within the team are also necessary if we
are to achieve our goals, which we’ve set quite high.
“Jeff has been appointed to assess the situation and advise us on what else is required to meet those goals.”
Weel said despite the team’s on-track problems, its sponsors remained fully committed to the team.
“The support we have had from our sponsors has been extraordinary and
reflects the professional way in which we have approached our business
in what has been a difficult and trying season,” he said.
“Supercheap Auto, No Limit and Holden have all recognized the effort
put in by the team, along with the positive exposure we have still been
able to generate and they are standing firmly by us.”
