Glenfords Racing eyes two titles in Carrera Cup final PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 December 2006
Alex Davison out in front where he again plans to be this weekend. The Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team head into the final round chasing both the series and rookie of the year championships.

Alex Davison will be out to become the first driver in history to win two Carrera Cup Championships while newcomer to the Paul Cruickshank Racing run outfit David Wall has his eyes set firmly on the Rookie of the Year award.

Davison, in the Glenfords-DeWalt GT3 Cup Car, has the form to challenge leader Craig Baird after a clean sweep of victories at the last round in Indy and a string of race wins and pole positions throughout the season.

David Wall is chasing the Rookie of the Year title at Phillip IslandTrailing by 113 points with 180 on offer, Davison needs a strong round from himself and a poor round from Baird but as the previous round demonstrated Davison is capable of anything and took chunks out of Baird's championship lead.

That lead would have been even less had it not been for the final race at Indy controversially ending a lap before it could be classified as an official race; the result stood and Davison was awarded victory but points were not awarded, costing the Glenfords-DeWalt driver 60 points, while and Baird was well back in the field in the same race.

"All I have control over is my race and I'll be looking to start the first race from pole like we have for so many rounds and keep the car at the front for the whole weekend; I can't control what happens to Baird," Alex Davison said.

"We'll give ourselves every chance this weekend but it would be disappointing to lose the title by less than the points we lost in the final race at Indy."

"I think tyre management will be crucial, particularly given the hot weather expected this weekend, but we have what we think is a strong set up and the right balance for the car which is also a bit different to many other tracks we've raced on."

Driving the Glenfords-Hitachi Porsche, David Wall heads into the final round a narrow leader in the Rookie of the Year.

Jonathon Webb is having his final drive in the Carrera Cup series this weekendLeading by six points over season long rival David Russell, Wall's goal is straight forward, he has to beat his rival this weekend and the title is his in what would be fitting result and cap off an impressive debut for the strong PCR outfit.

"We've basically been given the green light from Andy (McElrea) this weekend but our game is all about keeping in front of David Russell.there's only a small gap between the two of us so we'll be keeping a close eye on him and doing our best to keep in front of him," David Wall said today.

"The test we had down there a few weeks back was very useful and we gained some knowledge on both qualifying and race setup which was encouraging."

"Next year I'll again be seating up with PCR which is fantastic as we've had a great year to date and I'm looking forward to finishing off this year and really getting stuck into the championship next year."

The third member of the Carrera Cup team, Jonathon Webb in the Glenfords-Makita GT3 bids farewell to the championship he has been a part of since its beginning in 2003 and is currently running fifth in the championship.

Webb has been a regular at the front of the field for a number of seasons and was rewarded for his efforts with the co-driver position in the team's first ever V8 Supercar endurance events at Sandown and Bathurst this year.

In 2007, Webb plans to make the move to the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development Series.

Team Manager Andy McElrea has let the leash off all three drivers for the final round and is looking forward to seeing how his talented trio will fair at the fast and flowing Phillip Island circuit,

"We've basically said to the boys go out there and give it your best, obviously we don't want them taking each other out but there all very good, experienced drivers so that certainly won't be a worry for us."

"We had a very good test a few weeks ago on the same weekend the V8 team raced in Tasmania which was pleasing for what we got out of it."

"It should be a great finish to the season for all three drivers."
