While he had already collected the 2006 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, David Ryan was not going to rest on his laurels; instead he went all out in the final round at Oran Park on October 28-29.
He qualified the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo on pole (for the twelfth time in succession) and led the first (scratch) race from lights out to flag. He followed that up with wins in both the handicaps, quickly blasting through his Class B and C rivals. Steve Briffa pushed the Falcon in the first but lost touch in the traffic of the first of the handicap races. In the last Briffa got the jump on Ryan. But it was short lived as the latter surged ahead. Briffa finished second - for the third time - and was runner up for the round in his Holden Commodore SSZ.
Similarly mounted Leigh Mertens stoutly repelled the XR6 Turbo of Nick Dunkley throughout the first encounter for third where John Houlder was fifth after missing qualifying due to clutch problems in the Falcon XR8 during morning practice.
Next in the opening race was Trevor Keene in the Class B Toyota Celica as team mate and fastest qualifier Colin Osborne pulled out due to official (CAMS) commitments at Rally Australia in Perth.
Seventh placed Len Cave (Honda Integra Type R) was the best of Class B Trophy from BMW rival Rob Rubis while Matthew Brady in his Falcon XR8 AU was next, closely followed by Shane Smollens in a Toyota MR2.
David Mertens (Proton Satria) headed up Class C in the absence of class champion Darren Best who had another commitment in Victoria on Friday night that made the trek too arduous in the time available.
Amber Anderson was having another outing in the Toyota Echo Sportivo that had been driven before by Lauren Gray, to finish 13th while Allan Shephard's Celica retired along the way when its engine dropped a valve.
For the first of the two handicap affairs, the Class C cars went off scratch, with the Class B brigade going some 27 seconds later, and Class A another 13 seconds further on.
Keene's weekend finished in race two where the engine let go in a fairly big way. Third in that race went to Rob Rubis in the Class BT BMW 323i. He had just past David Mertens and boldly held off Leigh Mertens in the run to the flag.
Shephard had done an overnight engine change but electrical gremlins set in and he failed to complete either of Sunday's two races. Cave also failed to front for the second when there was no spark to the engine which was found to be the computer detecting a fuel vapour lock.
There were handicap adjustments for the final encounter with Class B off 26 and Class A held another 14 seconds. Rubis' race two elation was soon replaced with shock when he took off with the Class C cars in the last by mistake.
He backed up and restarted with the B and BT cars which were all black flagged for jumping prematurely, enabling David Mertens to snare third from Leigh Mertens and Anderson (Class C Toyota Echo).
