Wall Wins Carrera Cup Rookie Of The Year Title PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 10 December 2006
David Wall won the Rookie of the Year title at Phillip Island todayThe Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team came to Phillip Island chasing two titles, emerged with one and again showed they were a team of class.

David Wall claimed the Rookie of the Year title and his first podium for the year while Alex Davison had another podium result and finished second in the championship while Jonathon Webb was unluckily taken out in the final race when on track for a podium result.

Jonathon Webb in his final Carrera Cup race todayAll three Glenfords Racing cars sat comfortably in the top six for both practice sessions, with Alex Davison leading the team in the first session by setting the fastest time while Jonathon Webb toped the sheets for Glenfords Racing in the second session with third fastest on Saturday's practice session, while David Wall was consistent with two sixth positions.

The qualifying session again had the three Glenfords Cup Cars up the front of the field but this time it was Wall in the Glenfords-Hitachi who was the standout for the team with a season best qualifying performance.

With most of the top drivers setting their best times at the end of the session, Wall, who was sitting in fifth place, set a stunning 1:35.0513 to give him second place on the grid.

Webb who was sitting in the top three for much of the session qualified in fourth 0.3984 seconds off pole, while Davison held pole for much of the session before dropping in the closing stages of the session to fifth 0.4432 off the pace.

Race one saw Wall's Glenfords-Hitachi GT3 Porsche on the front row of the grid for the first time and his teammates sitting just behind.

Wall dropped a position on the start and the three Glenfords cars sat three, four and six before Davison made his move and jumped to third by the end of the first lap.

Charging hard, Davison was soon on championship rival Baird, while Wall sat behind and Webb began to build the pressure on Jim Richards.

Alex Davison, a standout all season, finished second in the championshipBefore long Davison made his move and on lap four was past Baird through turns one and two. Wall picked up where Davison left off and pressured Baird for third as the Glenfords-DeWalt GT3 of Davison set out for the race leader, David Reynolds.

Webb in the Glenfords-Makita GT3 made his way around Richards and joined the queue behind Baird and Wall.

Race leader Reynolds had cleared out to a small lead by the time Davison made his way to second, behind him on lap seven Wall also made his move on Baird, demonstrating the pace that netted him the front row in qualifying.

With Glenfords in second and third, Webb followed suit and passed Baird, the series leader, taking more points away from him.

As the chequered flag fell, the Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team finished a brilliant second, third and fourth, the best team result for the year and with all drivers in front of Baird and David Russell, the two chasing the titles against Davison and Wall.

Davison's second place allowed him to draw back 18 points on Baird while Wall's third place was his best result in his rookie year.

A strong start by Davison and Wall saw them settle into second and third while Webb sat in fifth on the opening lap.

Davison looked for a way around the Reynolds car for the lead as Wall pulled away from Russell with Webb close behind.

Wall closed up on Davison who continued to pressure Reynolds but was unable to find a way into the lead through the middle of the race.

Webb passed Russell on lap 9 and move to fourth, putting more space between Wall and Russell in the Rookie title chase.

In a carbon copy result of race one, the Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team finished race two with Davison in second, Wall third and Webb fourth in another brilliant team display.

The final race saw Davison settle in behind Reynolds at the start and Webb made a strong start to gain track position and settled in third.

Rookie leader Wall got caught up off the start and sat in sixth with Russell in fourth and positions remained unchanged for the first 10 laps.

However on the eleventh lap at turn four Webb was forced wide and suffered damage that forced him to retire at the end of the lap.

Wall as a result moved up a position to fifth behind Russell, while Davison remained in second and was through the corner before the incident.

The race finished with Davison in second position and enough points to seal second for the round as well as second for the championship in a brilliant season that rarely saw the Glenfords-DeWalt driver out of the top three.

While DNF was not the way Webb wanted to leave the Carrera Cup the Glenfords-Makita driver was on course for a podium result for his final round and showed all season he had the pace to run regularly at the front of the field. Webb has raced every season of the Carrera Cup championship with PCR and will race the V8 Supercar development series next season.

Fifth in the final race and third for the round was Wall in the Glenfords-Hitachi Porsche, who by claiming his first ever podium result also clinched the Rookie of the Year title. Wall, who will again race with PCR in the championship in 2007, signaled he'd be a challenger for the championship in 2007 after such an impressive debut season.

Driver Quotes:

Alex Davison

"It's been a great year and we did everything we could to win the championship but at the end of the day Baird and his team were too good and congratulations goes to them."

"The boys have given me a brilliant car all year and it would have been great to win the championship but to come away second is still a great achievement and just rewards for the effort the team has put in.

"The year has been great at PCR and I've had a really fun year with them and we had some great results along the way."

Jonathon Webb

"It was a sad way to end the season and my time with PCR to be taken out when we were going to be on the podium but the team was strong all weekend and it showed what a great team we have here; they'll certainly be up the front again next season."

"I've had a great time with PCR and leave with some great memories and great friends so you couldn't ask for much more, I learnt a lot and can't thank them enough."

David Wall

"We set ourselves the goal of winning the Rookie title after Clipsal so to win it here in the final race of the year is the perfect result for us."

"I've had a great bunch of guys to work with and have been really lucky to have two drivers in Alex (Davison) and Jonathon (Webb) who have so much experience in these cars and they've helped me a great deal which I really thank them for.

"A podium finish here is a great way to cap off the year. We've had a great weekend that started with a front row start in qualifying and the races went really well too so I couldn't be happier with the way everything has turned out."

Andy McElrea, Team Manager

"I'm very proud of David winning the Rookie championship. He's been the standout along with Reynolds this year and we look forward to taking him to the next level next year as a contender for the championship."

"Webb was unfortunately taken out by Fitzgerald when he was on track for a podium in his final race and round with us which would have been a great way for him to leave a championship that he has done so much for."

"Alex did everything he could to win the championship but it was always going to be tough after the points we lost at Indy and the pitstop debacle at Wakefield. He was the class of the championship this year and deserved better."
