Sam Bird (19, Claygate) today won his fourth Formula Renault UK race at Brands Hatch. In a faultless driving display from lights to flag, Sam also scooped a further two points for the fastest lap of the race, putting him firmly in third position in the championship.
Never before in this highly competitive series has a rookie clocked up so many wins, poles, podiums and fastest laps, as well as setting a new lap record at Donington just two weeks ago.
Sam qualified for the two races of the weekend on fourth and pole. In the first race, although he had the pace to beat the two drivers in front of him, there was no opportunity to overtake on the challenging Kent circuit.
“I was right behind Cheng, just waiting for him or Niemela to make a
mistake, but they drove well and I had to settle for a fourth place”,
said Sam afterwards.
In the second race, and starting from pole, Sam made a superb start and
quickly settled down into a good rhythm, never really under pressure
from Cheng in second place. “I’m very happy with today’s results” he
commented “and looking forward to Silverstone, where I know we can be
quick, and hopefully end the championship in third. I can’t catch the
top two, after my disastrous weekend in July, but to come third as a
rookie would be a great finish to a great year”.
Sam went on to thank his sponsors, his team (Fortec) and his parents
for their support and ended the day by helping with the TV commentary
on the BARC Renault race.
The final round of the Formula Renault UK Championship takes place at Silverstone on October 14/15.
