2006 UK Formula Ford Champion Nathan Freke rounded his season off with an F3 test as part of this prize for winning the championship and then headed off to the Autosport Awards as one of the 6 finalists in the Young Driver of the Year competition.
The F3 test at Silverstone in appalling conditions went well and despite not fitting the car well Nathan drove well and had a taste of a car with wings thanks to Fluid Motorsport who put up the prize.
Nathan’s hopes were high for the Young Driver of the Year Award as the
driving testing went very well and his lack of experience in cars with
aerodynamic ground force did not hold him back and he was as quick as
anybody in the 450bhp World Series Renault, and the Mercedes DTM car.
However in the Porsche Carrera Cup Car he came into his own and was
quickest of any driver, in fact quicker that the 2006 Porsche Cup
Champion. The interview phase of the test also went well with Nathan
impressing the 8 Judges including Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, and
Jonathon Palmer with his achievements and plans for the future.
Unfortunately the panel of Judges ultimately decided that one of the
other candidates would be more likely to succeed on the path to F1
despite not being as competitive in the cars and not winning a
championship after 3 attempts. However the achievement in reaching the
final 6 and driving 3 fantastic cars was a major reward for Nathan’s
season’s achievements.
Nathan is now turning his eyes towards the USA and the Champ Car
Atlantic series where there is a mapped out progression in the
motorsport progression. Talks are taking place with teams in the
States, and sponsorship funding is being sought to enable Nathan to
perform on the world’s largest motorsport stage.
‘I would like to thank all of my sponsors and supporters over this and
preceding years, without you I could not have achieved the success I
have, and I hope to repay the faith that you have in me by continuing
that success in 2007’
