Team West-Tec have launched an exciting link up with leading Spanish GP2 and F3 team, Racing Engineering. Acting as junior team to Racing Engineering, Team West-Tec will run a multi-car team in the Spanish F3 Cup in 2007.
Continuing to operate from its Rockingham base in Northamptonshire, but
also with opportunities to use facilities in Spain, the team should be
able to offer an excellent Formula 3 solution for drivers of all
nationalities.
Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon, Racing Engineering Team Principal: “I am
delighted that our F3 Cup cars, which have won three championships
between them, are going to be run by such a professional outfit as Team
West-Tec. We will be watching their drivers with interest as we hope
they will graduate to us in the future!”
John Miller, Team West-Tec F3 Managing Director: “We have spent 2006
evaluating almost every Formula 3 series in the world – and finally
chose the Spanish Championship as it offers well-backed, high quality
European racing without all of the expense of some of the bigger F3
series.
Our aim is for our drivers to be selected to join Racing Engineering’s
Class A team for 2008, where there is a proven possibility to progress
further onto a heavily-supported GP2 drive for the suitably able and
talented driver. Even in 2007, our drivers will have access to the
Racing Engineering GP2 team, to further their development and
experience. In recent years Spanish F3 drivers have secured an
excellent record of progression to higher levels of motorsport, and the
champion has enjoyed a Formula One test with Toyota who have backed the
championship.
The Cup also maintains eligibility for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young
Driver Award, which was an important part of the choice for us.
We are fortunate to have good team backers, which means that we are
able to offer good drivers the chance to compete for a reduced budget.”
Gavin Wills, Team West-Tec F3 Team Principal: “After six years of
mastering oval racing at Rockingham, we wanted to get back to our roots
and this was an opportunity too good to miss. You only have to spend
five minutes with Alfonso to understand how passionate and enthusiastic
he is about motor racing – and the chance to use his proven
championship-winning cars will stand us in good stead to challenge from
the start.
The cars will be in the UK at the beginning of December and we are
planning to test drivers in the UK in December and January in order
that we can evaluate them and select a strong line-up before moving on
to pre-season testing in Spain, France and Portugal.
The Spanish F3 series visits eight fantastic tracks, mainly F1 venues,
and has a real mini-F1 feel. Racing in front of large, appreciative
crowds and being televised live in many countries in the world, the
hospitality opportunities are superb and offer excellent value for
money.”
