Victorian
driver Tim Macrow had a 2006 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3
Championship campaign that proved to be a season of two very different
halves.
At the start of the year Macrow had no money, a superseded car with an
engine past it’s rebuild date and the unenviable record of having the
most podium finishes without any race victories – such was the story of
Macrow’s F3 career to date.
At the end of the season, however, Macrow was driving the latest model
car from Queensland-based Cooltemp Racing, had formed a strong alliance
with Scud Racing and had swept the last two championship rounds –
winning three of the final four races – to finish second in the points
standings with an impressive end of year flourish.
In a continuation of what is a classic rags-to-riches good news story,
Macrow has today confirmed that the winning combination will be
reunited for the opening round of the 2007 Gold Star championship that
gets underway in just under a month at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway.
Macrow, 22, will once again settle behind the wheel of the Bevan
Carrick-owned Cooltemp Racing Dallara F304 – Spiess, working with
successful engineer Gary Sturdy who prepares the car from its
Queensland base.
The operation will again be supported by Melbourne-based Scud Racing in
a strong collaborative effort that is sure to present a potent on-track
force.
Currently only confirmed for the opening round of the championship at
the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event in February, it is hoped that
the terrific trio will continue to work together for the entire
championship season to give Macrow the best possible shot at the Gold
Star title – in his third year of trying.
“It’s really good to be involved with Bevan Carrick, Gary Sturdy and
Bill Maddocks again for the upcoming season – it’s a really good
collaboration and they have been fantastic supporters of my career,”
Tim said.
“We all worked really well together during the last two rounds of the
2006 season and had a lot of success, so I think I have the best
possible combination now to go out and continue the form we showed at
the end of last year.
“It’s nice to have everything locked away well before the first round.
Last year we rocked up with no real plan of how it was going to work,
so to head into the season opener with firm plans and a great, winning
combination will enable me to focus on the racing itself, and prepare
myself for the new season.
“I am hoping that the combination continues for the rest of the season,” Added Macrow.
”I think Gary, Bevan and Bill are all very keen to win a championship
after coming home strongly to second place last year - and I’m very
keen to reward them for the support that they have shown me so winning
the championship would be the ultimate thing for everyone.
“Last year was such a rollercoaster but it ended brilliantly. The aim
is to begin the new one the way we finished the last.” He said.
The 2007 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship – featuring
drivers fighting for the 51st anniversary Australian Drivers
Championship for the CAMS Gold Star award – is Australia’s premier Open
Wheel category. The eight-round championship will get underway at
Eastern Creek Raceway on February 2 – 4, supporting the Australian
round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
A1 Team Australia seat holder Alan Jones also serves as a patron to Formula 3 Australia.
