Bassingham kart racer Jack Harvey finally added his name to a roll of honour that includes four former and current Formula One drivers and a winner of the Indy 500, when he picked up his award for winning the Junior British Kart Championship at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham on Sunday.
The 13-year-old is currently gearing up for his 2007 season as a factory Maranello Kart driver. However, after finally receiving the same trophy that has been won in the past by F1 star David Coulthard and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Allan McNish, he admitted that his achievements in 2006 were finally starting to sink in.
“It feels fantastic to finally receive the trophy and prizes for
winning the British title,” said Jack. “It was a tough season and it
was a mixture of speed and consistency that allowed me to come away
with the championship.”
As he accepted his awards alongside his rivals from the Super One
Championship he told the audience that he’d expected a hard season with
the talent that was in the class last year.
“When you look at the talent in the room, especially on the podium from
the JICA class, we’ve all raced in Europe this season and the results
that we’ve picked up shows that we produce some of the best drivers in
the world in the UK.”
“It wasn’t easy last year and I know that it will be even harder this
season, especially with racing against the best Europe has to offer as
well as the UK,” he said.
His attentions now turn to the 2007 season, though. Jack has just
returned from testing his new Maranello Kart chassis in Portugal and
this weekend will mark his debut for the Italian manufacturer as he
takes to his home track of PF International for a winter series event.
“I really can’t wait to race the Maranello Kart,” he smiled. “It’s been
going very well in testing so far, but I want to get out and start
racing again in readiness for the season ahead. It will also give me a
better idea of just how good the kart is before the first of the
Italian races starts in February,” he added.
“I want to get more top class results this season and I’m working hard
to be physically and mentally tougher for 2007 to make sure that I can
continue the success,” he said.
