Visitors to the Renault Sport UK stand at Autosport International became the first fans in the world to see the new 2007 Formula Renault 2.0, which will feature an updated bodykit in this season’s Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship. The car on display at Birmingham’s NEC from 11th – 14th January, which takes inspiration from Renault F1 Team’s double World Champion R26, was the very first updated model produced by Renault Sport Technologies.
Teams and drivers looking to compete in Formula Renault UK took the earliest opportunity to see the new car. Among the many changes in external design are F1-style ‘chimneys’ on the sidepods, sculpted nose, new front wing and augmented rear diffuser. Underneath, the car has a new, sleeker profile. Key components of the car including the carbon-fibre tub – the incredibly strong central cockpit that surrounds the driver – chassis and suspension remain unchanged.
Alongside the new Formula Renault 2.0 on the Renault Sport UK stand
were Comtec Racing’s World Series by Renault championship-winning
Formula Renault 3.5 and Renault F1 Team’s double championship-winning
R26. Following the updates to the Formula Renault 2.0, a clear
relationship can be seen between the three cars offering young drivers
a defined path from National racing to the pinnacle of the sport.
Commenting on the new car, Richard Dutton, Team Principal of reigning
Formula Renault UK Entrants champion Fortec Motorsport, said: “I think
the new car looks great and we’re looking forward to working with it
and learning how to get the best out of it. Every team will face a
challenge in working out the best set-up for each circuit and we’ll be
doing all we can to successfully defend the Drivers’ and Entrants’
titles.”
Jeremy Metcalfe, who finished fifth in the drivers’ standings in 2006
and is strongly considering a return this season, added: “The car
definitely looks better in my opinion and I can’t wait to start testing
and see how it feels on the track. I would say the F1 look is certainly
appealing to drivers and hopefully it will encourage sponsors to come
on board as well.”
The new bodykit is due for delivery to the UK in late February, ahead
of the first official two-day Formula Renault UK test at Rockingham
Motor Speedway on 1st/2nd March.
