Motorsport is more commonly known as a sport which is dominated by males, however at the Lithgow Karting circuit this weekend there won’t be one male competitor and it will all be for a good cause.
For the first time in Australia the venue, which is located west of Sydney, will host a Ladies Only Race day to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
This innovation was brought about in an attempt to highlight females in karting and the important role they play not just in racing but in all aspects of karting and that as a sport, is open to all section of the community
In it is anticipated up to 70 females will travel from as far north as
Townsville, as far south as Albury and all throughout New South Wales
to compete in the race meeting aboard a variety of karts.
“Karting and motorsport in general for that matter is very much a
family orientated sport. People of all ages, both male and female, have
the ability to be involved in the sport in a variety of roles both on
and off the racing circuit,” said Australian Karting Association
President Richard Erdmann.
“The all-female event is a great initiative by the Combined Districts
Kart Club and it is all for a great cause, the National Breast Cancer
Foundation.
“Over the past few years we have seen an increase in the number of
female competitors in karting and over time I believe this event will
assist with further growth of these numbers.
“Hopefully this event will develop over the next few years into a
significant mark on the Australian Karting calendar and provide the
opportunity to highlight the female involvement in our sport while
raising money for charity.”
Along with the racing activities there will be several fundraising
events held over the weekend including a charity dinner on the Saturday
evening where the Fundraising Queen will be crowned. This dinner will
also provide the opportunity for people who were previously involved in
the sport to reunite with each other in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Combined Districts Kart Club office is located Suite 1, 156/158
Queen St, St Marys with events held at the Lithgow City Raceway, Oakey
Forest Road, Marrangarro (3km West of Lithgow). Practice for the Ladies
event will be held on Saturday in conjunction with a Junior race day
with the all-female event kicking off at 10am Sunday.
