Reigning Junior British Kart Champion Jack Harvey got his 2007 season off to a superb start at the weekend when he won on his racing debut for the factory Maranello Kart UK team at the PF International circuit.
The 13-year-old was entered for the latest round of the JICA winter series and immediately showed his rivals that his 2006 pace hadn’t disappeared over the Christmas break with a sensational victory in his first heat on the Italian chassis.
“It felt great to win in my first event on the Maranello kart,”
explained Jack afterwards. “I got a really good start but the guys
behind were catching me and I had to make sure I stuck to the dry line
on the last couple of laps, which made it harder for anyone to try and
snatch the win away from me,” he added.
In the second heat some minor carburettor problems hampered Jack’s
expected charge from his back of the grid starting position. A shove
from another racer also put him onto the grass in the opening laps,
meaning that he was out of contention for a good result.
For the final he lined up in 11th place and a fantastic drive through
the field allowed him to take third place at the flag, meaning another
podium result and more experience on his new chassis.
“We’re treating the early races as testing in some ways to learn more
about the kart and set-ups,” said Jack. “But at the same time we want
to win too, so to be right at the sharp end at this point in the season
is great and we’ll be aiming to keep up the momentum throughout the
year now,” he added.
“The team worked really well all weekend and it was great to be able to
try different things and see where we are against the opposition. It
definitely looks good for the start of the season,” he added.
