McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finalist Jeremy Metcalfe has confirmed he will return to the Formula Renault UK Championship this season with the re-branded AKA Cobra team, having officially agreed terms with the Leicestershire-based squad today.
The 18-year-old, who concluded the 2006 season fifth overall in the driver standings with four podiums and victory in the Donington Park Racing Association Club (DPRAC) Cup to his credit, is expected to be a genuine championship challenger this year and stands a superb chance of claiming his first car racing title since making his debut in 2005.
“It’s fantastic news to be able to confirm our re-signing with AKA
Cobra and I’m confident we will be able to challenge hard for the
championship this year”, said Jeremy after officially confirming the
continuation of his partnership with Andrew Kirkaldy’s team.
“Everything is in place for us to enjoy a very successful season. The
announcement Chris Niarchos’ Cobra Group has joined forces with AKA
really does put the team in pole position in my mind to provide me with
the best possible opportunity to become 2007 Formula Renault UK
Champion.”
Jeremy, who calls Fleet in Hampshire his home and away from the race
track studies Banking and Finance at Loughborough University, enjoyed a
successful campaign in 2006 and undoubtedly produced the two
performances of the season.
During the third round of the season at Oulton Park, the teenage
sensation scythed his way through the field from 14th on the grid to
second position in just one corner. He then backed the incredible
result up with a similarly spectacular drive from 12th on the grid to
third place in round four, both performances bringing Jeremy ‘Driver of
the Day’ awards.
Throughout the 2007 season Jeremy will be backed by sponsors BillChaser
and Focus IT. Prior to his graduation to single-seater competition in
2005 he enjoyed a glittering career in karting with highlights
including title victories in the MSA British Cadet Karting Championship
and the Formula A Parma Industrials Karting Championship.
AKA Cobra continues to be spearheaded by team boss Andrew Kirkaldy and
chief engineer Paul Jackson although the squad now benefits from the
added commercial expertise of Chris Niarchos’ Cobra Group. The Canadian
is, of course, a team-mate of Kirkaldy’s in the Scuderia Ecosse GT team.
