Four weeks after the registration period for the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup began, a total of 25 entries have been received by the Championship organisers. With the first race meeting at Brands Hatch still more than one month away, the final entry figure looks set to pass 30 cars as drivers rush to take part in the first season to feature the 2.0-litre, 205bhp New Clio Cup.
Reigning champion Total Control Racing has three confirmed entries in
the shape of James Williams (Norwich), Alex MacDowall (Carlisle) and
Ben Winrow (Earls Barton, Northants), who returns for his third season
of Clio Cup after a one-year absence. TCR is expected to announce at
least one more driver before the start of the campaign.
Last season’s vice-champion Entrant JHR Developments has confirmed
three drivers for its championship challenge. Steve Wood (Ashleworth,
Gloucs) returns with the team alongside Andrew Herron (Dromore, Co
Down) and Robert Lawson (Richmond, N Yorks) although Team Manager
Steven Hunter is planning further additions to his line-up.
Full Speed Racing, the team formed by 2006 race-winner Mark Speller
(Hertford) currently has four drivers registered, including Speller
himself. He will race alongside Ciaran Butler (Haddenham, Bucks),
Martin Johnston (Lindale, Cumbria) and Chris Panayioutou (Cheshunt,
Herts). Full Speed Racing has also signed the reigning Formula Woman
champion Nikki Welsby (Kingsbury, Warks).
Forster Motorsport has two confirmed entries, namely Arthur Forster
(Morpeth, Northumberland) and Martin Depper (Hollywood, Birmingham).
Glenn Eagling Motorsport has a two-car entry with Dan Eagling (Norwich)
and Guy Parr (Bath).
For the first time ever, two father-and-son teams will race in the same
Clio Cup Championship. Jim Edwards Snr and Jim Edwards Jnr were the
last to achieve the feat in 2001 and this year, Amery Motorsport enters
Jonathan and David Shepherd (both Sandbach, Cheshire), while Momo UK
enters Sean and Robert Brown (both Billericay, Essex).
Single-car entries come from Z Speed Racing with Martin Byford
(Colchester), Stancombe Vehicle Engineering with 2006 ELF Renault Clio
Winter Cup champion Niki Lanik (Ashurst Wood, W Sussex), PH Motorsport
with Philip House (Harrogate), Coastal Racing with Carl Bradley
(Morecambe) and EPS UK with IDL Racing Services running Robert Gaffney
(Waltham Abbey).
Mel Healey (Cheam, Surrey) will race for Team Pyro with team-mates
expected to be added in the coming weeks. Andrew Jordan (Sutton
Coldfield) will race for Team Eurotech – John Guest Speedfit and is
also expected to have a team-mate.
In addition to those already registered, Mardi Gras Motorsport plans to
enter a multi-car team. A number of other cars, from a total of 53 that
have been sold to date, are also expected to feature in the 2007 series.
