A1 TEAM USA announces involvement in the 66th Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 09 February 2007
Washington D.C. - On June 16, 2007, the 66th Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby will take place on the streets of our Nation’s Capitol. A1 TEAM USA of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsports is proud to announce its sponsorship of this event. The derby has been referred to as “the greatest amateur racing event in the world” and A1 TEAM USA, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is pleased to play such a vital role in support of a diverse group of children residing in the Greater Washington D.C. area, collaborating together toward a common goal of enduring tradition and environmentally-friendly competition.

The Greater Washington D.C. Area Soap Box Derby includes boys and girls ages 8-17 who race down Capitol Hill in gravity-powered cars. The winners of the Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby advance to the 70th World Championship on July 26, 2007 in Akron, Ohio. As a sponsor of the Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby, A1 TEAM USA is pleased to build community by bringing together youth from different areas of the Washington D.C. Capitol area in one of America’s greatest amateur sporting events.

A1 TEAM USA will also be sponsoring the Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby Assembly Weekend on May 5, 2007 during which the group of D.C.-based children will build and assemble their A1 TEAM USA derby cars with the help of Derby directors, A1 TEAM USA drivers, and local sports celebrities.

A1 TEAM USA will be marching down Constitution Avenue along side the Soap Box Derby float in the Washington D.C. St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 11, 2007.

“We are very proud to be bringing together the American Red Cross with the Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby to participate in this environmentally-friendly and long-lasting tradition,” said A1 TEAM USA Owner Rick Weidinger. “The smiles on the faces of these D.C. area children as they build and compete in their very own derby cars will make the experience priceless. We will definitely be on the lookout for the next A1 TEAM USA race car driver during the event!”  Weidinger continued, “This event takes an act of Congress to pass every year in order to allow the Soap Box Derby race to be held on Capitol Hill. We are sure it is in good hands with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

The 66th Greater Washington D.C. Soap Box Derby event will take place on Constitution Avenue on Capitol Hill, between New Jersey and Louisiana Avenues from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 16, 2007.  Admission to watch the event is free.
