Johnny Cecotto Jr., son of former F1 driver Alberto ‘Johnny’ Cecotto, will compete in the International Formula Master Series’ debut season it was announced today.
The 17-year-old, born in Augsburg, Germany, looks set to follow in his father’s illustrious footsteps, having already competed in Formula BMW ADAC, Formula Renault 2000, Formula 3 and Formula 3000. With only two years experience in single-seaters, he is proving to be a very fast learner having already won a race in German Formula 3 with Team Ombra last year.
“I’m very happy for Johnny,” said Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto senior who
has raced in DTM and BTCC as well as Formula One. “He was certain about
his decision from the start and likes Team Ombra very much.”
Cecotto senior won the 1975 350cc and 1978 Formula 750 World
Championships in motorbikes before switching to four-wheels to win the
1989 Italian Touring Car Championship as well as the 1994 and 1998
German STW Supertouring Championship.
“The Series as a whole sounds very interesting,” added Cecotto senior
when asked about International Formula Master. “A new generation of
cars, the 2008 regulation cars, for sure it will be interesting. The
fact that no-one will have an advantage because this is a new formula
is very attractive too.”
Series Director, Mauro Sipsz was equally pleased with the new signing:
“I am so glad to hear that the Cecotto name will be part of
International Formula Master. As a series, we are working very hard to
create an exciting environment for young racers to progress in and
Johnny Cecotto Jr.’s decision to join IFM together with his father’s
approval really validates our work.”
Johnny Cecotto Jr, will be making his International Formula Master racing debut in Valencia, Spain on 20 May.
