Bishop Part Of Drag Racing History PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 17 February 2007
johnm1_med Brisbane driver Stuart Bishop was a part of Australian drag racing history during Western Sydney’s Summernationals, securing the eighth and final spot in the country’s quickest ever Top Doorslammer field.

In a thrilling final run by Bishop, completing his third qualifier among the 21-car contingent on Friday night, he was able to rocket his ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer to a personal best 6.233 second effort.

The performance was enough to scrape into the field ahead of local hope Deno Brijeski who had momentarily held the bump spot of 6.25 seconds before Bishop’s electrifying pass.

There were scenes of jubilation among the tireless Stuart Bishop Racing crew who had all contributed strongly during the debut Sydney performance of the Brisbane rookie.

Among a stellar field of drivers, Bishop had booked a first elimination bout against the current World speed and elapsed time record holder John Zappia, who recorded the top qualifying position with a blistering 6.040 second effort.

The duo lined up side-by-side earlier tonight and despite Bishop’s inexperience, competing in just his third event in the Group One category, he remained composed against the seasoned veteran.

Securing another personal best of 6.180 seconds, Bishop aimed up admirably but was overcome as the consistency of Zappia saw him turn in another 6.04 second pass to collect the spoils and advance through to the semi-finals.

“It was a massive field of heavy-hitters here in Sydney and for us to qualify again ahead of some of the bigger players in Top Doorslammer was a huge buzz,” said Bishop.

“At the Nationals it was Victor (Bray) first up in eliminators and this time around it was the toughest guy in the World so we knew it was going to be a massive job.

“We did get Zap (John Zappia) off the light but then he just crept ahead of us for the win.

“Ours was the quickest side-by-side in the first round, the car just got better and better over the weekend and we’ve captured another PB so all-in-all another big effort from the team.

“This is yet another great confidence booster and we look forward to doing a few extra things and trying a few new ideas before we race back at home during the Tin Top Titles on April 28, before the grand finale at the Winternationals in June.”

Off the track, Bishop couldn’t have been happier with the response from Sydney fans who were busily snapping images at the Summernationals and he’s counting on a flood of entries into the Wallace Bishop Jewellers photographic competition.

Drag racing fans young and old are encouraged to involve themselves and be in the running to win some great cash and prizes.

Opportunities abound Australia-wide to shoot images at your local race track and forward them through the website www.stuartbishopracing.com.au to enter.

Simply by taking photos of all the drag racing action on and off the track, then submitting images into the competition, individuals will go in the running to win cash and prizes worth more than $20 000, courtesy of Wallace Bishop Jewellers.

The length and breadth of the country will play host to a vast array of quarter mile drag racing action, coordinated at the three major venues in Ipswich, Sydney and Perth, plus plenty of smaller hotspots in between.

It’s not just the major venues that will be pumping with quarter mile drag racing action in 2007, as some of the smaller quarter and eighth mile facilities get in on the act.

Stretching along the East Coast of Australia, Victoria’s South Coast Raceway at Portland has regularly scheduled race meetings and it’s a similar story at Tasmania’s Motors-ACDelco strip.

Mildura’s Sunset Strip in Victoria, Darwin’s Hidden Valley Drag Strip and Queensland’s Palmyra Dragway (Mackay), Benaraby Raceway (Gladstone) and Warwick Dragway are also bound to have plenty of high speed thrills in store during the year.

Full details of the Wallace Bishop photographic competition are available at www.stuartbishopracing.com.au as is all the new up to date information relevant to the SBR team and the ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer.
