Lincolnshire karting champion Jack Harvey got his international season off to a frustrating start in the one-off ‘Winter Cup’ at the Lonato circuit in Italy at the weekend.
The current Junior British Champion struggled with the new engines that the Maranello Team were using over the course of the meeting and he started the weekend on the back foot in terms of outright pace.
However, hard work by the team mean that by the end of the weekend Jack
was right at the sharp end with regards to lap times, which allowed him
to challenge his rivals in the final on Sunday.
A great drive in the opening race allowed him to move up from 14th to
sixth place, giving him a sixth row starting position for the grand
final. He lost a couple of places at the start when he was caught up
with another racer crashing in front of him.
A superb run over the middle part of the race meant that he was able to
climb back into the top ten, setting some of the fastest lap times of
the weekend. Unfortunately, another incident in the closing stages
dropped him back out of contention and he had to settle for 14th place
at the flag.
An upbeat Jack was left frustrated by his finishing position, but happy with his and the kart’s pace by the end of the weekend.
“Obviously I’m disappointed to finish where I did, especially in my
first proper European event,” he said. “But, we thought at the start of
the week that we were going to struggle on pace against the other
teams. But, we worked hard over the course of the meeting and I’m
really happy with the speed we had by the time we got to the finals on
Sunday,” he added.
“If we can take this pace forward to the rest of the races and keep
moving forwards then we’ll be in good shape for the championship races
later in the year,” he added.
