Moffat Joins Sonic For Formula Ford in 2007 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 February 2007
James Moffat has finalised a deal to drive with Sonic Motor Racing in this year's Australian Formula Ford Championship kicking off at the Clipsal 500 on 1 March in Adelaide.

Moffat, son of racing legend Alan Moffat, had a frustrating year in 2006 having to sit the year out after an impressive 2005 season in the V8 Ute Series.

Moffat took out V8 Utes 'Rookie of the Year' honours in 2005 after a terrific debut season in the category, but had to sit out 2006 after some frustrating circumstances left him without a drive.

"We had everything lined up for a Fujitsu Series drive last year, but it fell through at the last minute due to some outside influences that were out of our hands," said James Moffat.

2007 looks far more promising after securing a drive with Sonic, and Moffat is under no illusions as to what he comes up against in this year's Formula Ford Championship, with the largest ever field assembled since the introduction of the Fiesta engines.

"My goal in the next three years is to secure a drive in the V8 Supercar series, and although I had a drive lined up again with the Jack Daniels team in the Fujitsu Series for 2007, they decided not to run their cars at the last minute."

"Fortunately there was still a spot remaining on the Sonic roster, and I couldn't be happier, Formula Ford is a terrific category for up and coming drivers and I am thrilled to driving for Sonic."

"It will be a competitive year but the proof is in the pudding when it comes down to the success of the category, many of the guys that do well at Formula Ford end up in a V8 Supercar and I have given myself every chance for success in 2007," said Moffat.

Moffat will join Tim Blanchard and Glen Wood to round out the driver line-up for Sonic this year, and Team Boss Michael Ritter couldn't be happier with the inclusion of the young gun.

"It has been a long and drawn out process to finalise our line-up and it may not be the best preparation but it's fantastic to officially have James on board to join Tim and Glen," said Sonic Team Manager Michael Ritter.

Sonic will switch to the Mygale SJ07 for the coming season, and all reports so far are positive in terms of how they will stack up against the Van Diemen chassis the team used last year.

"A couple of our guys have tested in a Mygale that we had on loan, as there were some delays with the new Mygale's coming over from France."

"We have been testing since mid January and the Mygale's will be every bit as quick as the cars we used last year, there is no question in terms of their speed and we are confident they will serve us well this year," said Ritter.

Round one of the 2007 Australian Formula Ford Championship kicks off at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide 1-4 March.
