A record number of entries have been received for the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup ahead of the first official test at Silverstone on Monday, 26th February. A total of 43 registrations have reached championship organisers, the greatest number of entries since Clio Cup racing began in the UK in 1991. The series is Renault Sport UK’s biggest since it joined the British Touring Car Championship support race package in 1992. Two former champions confirmed their presence on the record-breaking grid on the final day of registration. Reigning Clio Cup champion Total Control Racing confirmed 2003 Clio Cup champion Jonathan Fildes (Co Meath, Ireland), who completes its four-car line-up. TCR has already entered James Williams (Norwich), Ben Winrow (Earls Barton, Northants) and Alex MacDowall (Carlisle). The 2000 Clio Cup champion and 1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo champion Jim Edwards Jnr (Maidenhead, Berks) will have his New Clio Cup prepared by Mark Fish Motorsport for the Kangaroo International/SMC Renault/Mark Fish team. Former Renault Sport Spider champion and consistent Clio Cup front-running Entrant Mardi Gras Motorsport has confirmed triple Clio Cup vice-champion Ed Pead (Northampton) at the head of its four-car line-up. Irish driver Árón Smith (Rathfarnham, Dublin) and Britons Jon Lanceley (Tibberton, Gloucs) and Chris Rice (Beverley, East Yorks) complete the Silverstone-based team’s quartet. Scottish teenager Michael Doyle (Gartocharn, West Dunbartonshire) returns for a second season with JHR Developments, his third year of Clio Cup racing in all. The 19-year-old will be expecting to challenge for race wins with the four-car JHR squad after steadily improving throughout his 2006 campaign where he finished fourth overall. His team-mates are Steve Wood (Ashleworth, Gloucs), Andrew Herron (Dromore, Co Down) and Robert Lawson (Richmond, N Yorks). Robertshaw Racing has confirmed two entries for its second season of Clio Cup racing, in the shape of Alan Taylor (Whitley Bay) and Chris Dymond (Akeley, Bucks). Taylor finished 16th in last season’s ELF Renault Clio Cup, while Dymond is the reigning Fiat Racing Challenge Rookie champion. The famous Cleland name returns to the BTCC arena with Jamie Cleland (Melrose) and Finlay Crocker (Bathgate, West Lothian) racing for Cleland Motorsport, managed by Touring Car legend and double champion John. As expected, Full Speed Racing has added the reigning Formula Woman champion Nikki Welsby (Kingsbury, Warks) to its team, along with a sixth driver, Anthony Scragg (Tunbridge Wells, Kent). The duo join Mark Speller (Hertford), Ciaran Butler (Haddenham, Bucks), Martin Johnstone (Lindale, Cumbria) and Chris Panayiotou (Cheshunt, Herts) at the Essex-based outfit. Team Pyro will have 16-year-old prospect Christopher Law (St Martins, Guernsey) alongside Mel Healey (Cheam, Surrey), while reigning BARC Clubmans champion Alex Osborne (Northampton) joins the series as a privateer with Alex Osborne Motorsport. Multi-car teams already confirmed in the Clio Cup paddock are Forster Motorsport with Arthur Forster (Morpeth, Northumberland) and Martin Depper (Hollywood, Birmingham) and Glenn Eagling Motorsport, which has Dan Eagling (Norwich) and Guy Parr (Bath). Momo UK has a father-and-son team in the shape of Sean and Robert Brown (both Billericay, Essex), as does Amery Motorsport with Jonathan and David Shepherd (both Sandbach, Cheshire). Seven other entries are one-car teams, led by reigning ELF Renault Clio Winter Cup champion Niki Lanik (Ashurst Wood, W Sussex) at Stancombe Vehicle Engineering. Andrew Jordan (Sutton Coldfield) races for Team Eurotech – John Guest Speedfit, with Robert Gaffney (Waltham Abbey) racing for EPS UK with IDL Racing Services. Z Speed Racing returns for a title challenge with Martin Byford (Colchester), while Phil House prepares for his second season of Clio Cup racing with his own PH Motorsport team. Coastal Racing makes its Clio Cup debut with Carl Bradley, (Morecambe) at the wheel, while Collison Racing also debuts with Steve Collison (Bodle Street Green, E Sussex) as the driver. Former Legends racer Derek Pierce (West Kilbride, Ayrshire) will race for the J & D Pierce Race Team. The 43rd driver will be the winner of the Double Six Racing scholarship, being hosted by 2006 Clio Cup racer Marc Nelson. The winner will be decided at the scholarship final at Three Sisters on Wednesday, 28th February. Two official Clio Cup tests are scheduled for Monday, 26th February at Silverstone and Monday, 12th March at Brands Hatch Indy. The first race meeting is at Brands Hatch Indy on 31st March/1st April.
