Kids Get Ride Of Their Lives PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 03 March 2007
wpschopperkids1-med WPS Racing and WOW Racing hosted more than a dozen children from the Cancer Council South Australia at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide today.

The children, and some of their parents, had the chance to get a bird’s eye view of the Adelaide street circuit from the WPS helicopter.

A 10-minute ride with WPS pilot Dan O’Dwyer gave the majority of the group their first chance to ride in a helicopter and not one of them was missing a large smile after the experience.

WPS Ford driver and former Bathurst winner, Jason Bargwanna, and his WOW Racing team-mate Max Wilson were on hand to meet the children and help them on and off the black and silver WPS machine.

“This is what V8 Supercars is all about,” said Bargwanna.

“I think motorsport is one of the most charitable sports in the world and it is a great feeling to be able to do something for sick kids during the season.

“When you meet these kids you get an understanding of their courage and it is a real reality check.”

WPS Racing owner Craig Gore said the opportunity to host today’s group of children would be one of his personal highlights of this weekend’s Clipsal 500.

“We have the helicopter at most races and we always try and give some local children a chance to do something they would not normally do,” said Gore.

“These kids have enough ordinary stuff in their lives, if we can do a little something to brighten up their weekend, then fantastic.

“I probably get more of a buzz out of seeing their faces after the ride then they get going for the ride.”

12-year old Gareth Gill from Seacliff Park, a southern suburb of Adelaide, was one of the first of the group to go for a ride.

“That was fantastic,” said Gareth.

“Going for a ride in the WPS helicopter around the circuit was a great surprise for us and something I won’t forget.”
