Team VIP Petfoods was victorious in both the Carrera Cup and Aussie Racing Cars today at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide to continue its successful start to the season.
Craig Baird led from start to finish over the 12 laps of race one of the Carrera Cup to put himself in a strong position to defend his Clipsal 500 Porsche crown.
While Paul Kemal fired through from fourth on the grid to shoot away for a commanding 3.5 second win in the third race of the Aussie Racing Cars and rise to second overall for the round.
Baird, the VIP Petfoods and Stihl backed star of motor racing, proved
too hard to pass despite constant pressure from rivals David Reynolds,
Alex Davison and Dean Fiore in the all-Porsche race.
Baird’s experience and composure came to the fore as he crossed the
line for the first race win of the season and the 11th of his Carrera
Cup career.
“We’re going to see a lot of races like that this season – close and hard,” said Baird.
“That’s the result we wanted but it was tough with Reynolds and Davison putting a lot of pressure on.
“The car is running really well which is a credit to the team – now we’ve just got to keep the good results coming tomorrow.”
Klark Quinn was also a strong performer for Team VIP Petfoods with a top 10 result.
The 24-year-old from the Gold Coast finished ninth after starting from
13th on the grid, and will be looking at making up more positions in
the final two races tomorrow.
TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge contender Tony Quinn finished 15th overall and third out of the privateer entries.
Reigning Aussie Racing Cars series champion, Kemal, blitzed the field
over eight laps to throw down a definite challenge to current round
leader James Ward in tomorrow’s final race.
Kemal moved from fourth to second by turn two and then finally got past
Ward on lap three. Despite Ward getting back past him, Kemal reassumed
the lead on the next lap and pulled away for a resounding victory.
He now sits only six points behind Ward in the round points and a chance to stand on the top tier of the podium.
The Clipsal 500 will culminate tomorrow with Races 2 and 3 of the Carrera Cup and Race 4 of the Aussie Racing Cars.
Race 3 of Carrera Cup will be telecast live during Seven’s coverage of
the Clipsal 500 with highlights shown of Race 2, while the Aussie
Racing Cars will be telecast on Fox Sports with its own exclusive
program each month.
