WPS Racing’s Jason Bargwanna opened his V8 Supercar Championship Series points account when he finished 15th in the opening leg of the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide today. Bargwanna’s team-mate Max Wilson was 17th in the WOW Racing Falcon after being turned around on lap 37 of the 78-lap race by Craig Lowndes before suffering a jammed wheel nut in his compulsory tyre stop seven laps later. A new points scoring system introduced this season means that any car below the 15th finishing position does not score any championship points. Bargwanna was put under pressure in the closing stages of the race by Holden driver Steve Owen, but he dug deep with three championship points up for grabs. Amazingly the race went its full 78 laps without a safety car period which meant the drivers had to run full race distance without the “luxury” of a safety car period. Todd Kelly won today’s opening race from polesitter James Courtney and Jamie Whincup. WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY ... JASON BARGWANNA - #10 WPS RACING FALCON “That was the hardest I have had to work for three championship points, but they are like gold now with the new scoring system,” said Bargwanna. “I struggled with the brakes in the first five laps or so, but eventually I found a balance. “It was good to have the pace of Kelly and Tander, but there are plenty of other things we need to keep working at. “In the closing laps Steve Owen obviously had a faster car. “I brought him back to me then I was able to control the last three or four laps. “The track certainly got slippery after Lee Holdsworth had his problems and dropped oil around the place. “I also had problems with my drink bottle on around lap 50 which made it pretty hard work towards the end. I certainly appreciate the extra training I have been doing over the off-season. “The goal is to stay out of trouble tomorrow and hopefully we can continue to add to the points tally.” MAX WILSON - #8 WOW RACING FALCON “It was a pretty tough day,” said Wilson. “The WOW Falcon was definitely better than it was yesterday, but Lowndes turning me around and then the wheel nut sticking really hurt us. “We managed to make up some ground, but unfortunately we could not break into the points. “I think without those incidents we could have finished with a pretty solid result. “There was a lot of oil at turn four and I almost spun on it at one stage. “After the dramas I was basically by myself so I settled into a bit of a groove and ran around. “I think there are a few more changes we can make overnight and there is no reason that we cannot finish in the points tomorrow.” CRAIG GORE – OWNER WPS RACING “Overall it was a pretty tough day, but both guys did a solid job,” said Gore. “There is no doubt that Max would have been knocking on the door of the top 10 if Lowndes had not turned him and we had not had the cross-threaded wheel-nut. “We have certainly identified a few things we can improve on the cars overnight and it we have a realistic goal of having both cars in the points tomorrow.” RACE 1 RESULTS 1.
