AFTER a Gold Coast Indy event where he took a major bite out of the championship points lead of rival Craig Lowndes, Toll HSV Dealer Team driver Rick Kelly has vowed to continue his attack in the next round of the series at Symmons Plains in Tasmania this weekend.
And the 23-year-old has safe in the back of his mind the fact that his team dominated the event last year, with team-mate Garth Tander winning the round and Kelly coming home in third overall.
Kelly thinks he has Lowndes on the hop after Indy, where the series leader received two separate penalties for illegal burn outs and cutting a chicane, ultimately involving himself in uncustomary controversy with his post-race comments.
Add to that the fact that Lowndes has to front a Stewards Hearing on Friday in Tasmania for those post-race comments and it’s easy to see why Kelly feels no pressure.
“I don’t care at all about what’s going on in other people’s garages or what problems they have, we’re worried about what happens in our own garage,” said Kelly, who trails Lowndes by just 30 points with three rounds to run.
“We’re going to do what we’ve done all year and take it session by session and race by race. It sounds boring, but it’s true.
“The results from last year certainly help, but it’s important we’re on the pace straight away from the first practice session, which is always half the battle at races these days.
“Certainly we had good results at Symmons Plains last year but others had misfortunes and problems that I’m sure they won’t have this year, so it won’t be easy, no matter how well we went there last year.”
