Hampshire single-seater star Jeremy Metcalfe continued his pre-season Formula Renault UK preparations at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk today happy with his progress after concluding the day sixth fastest and quickest of the AKA Cobra team drivers.
Although he was also inside the top six during the opening day of the test yesterday, Wednesday, 7th March, the BRDC Rising Star wasn’t best pleased with his performance but a regrouped approach today left the 18-year-old feeling much happier and with growing confidence with just over three weeks remaining until the first race of the year.
After posting a best lap of 1m 05.208 seconds (107.766mph) on
Wednesday, Jeremy went faster today to shave another 10th of a second
off his time with a lap of 1m 05.125 seconds (107.903mph) this morning.
Unfortunately, his plans to make further inroads towards the top three
were scuppered when the afternoon session was cancelled by Renault
Sport UK officials following an accident involving Manor Competition’s
Kris Loane (Kesh, Co.Fermanagh) which saw the Northern Irishman’s front
wing suffer a breakage.
With concerns over safety, championship organisers rightly took the
decision to investigate the problem thoroughly ahead of next Tuesday’s
official test at Brands Hatch in Kent, meaning today’s outing at
Snetterton concluded a session early.
“We had a very good day today, I’m very happy with what we achieved
this morning and I’m confident we would have been back among the top
three or four this afternoon had the session gone ahead”, said the
Loughborough University student.
“Obviously, it’s important on the grounds of safety for Renault to look
into the problem with the front wing so hopefully everything will be
sorted out in time for Brands Hatch next week as it’s only a few days
away.”
He added: “Yesterday wasn’t a great day for us, even though we still
ended up in the top six, but we regrouped this morning and instantly
went much better. I’m confident we’re making the progress we need to
ahead of the first round at the end of the month.”
In light of the front wing failure which arose today, there is some
concern next week’s test at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit may not go ahead.
Renault Sport officials, however, are confident the test will take
place as planned on Tuesday, 13th March.
