Seventh Row Starting Spot For Ambrose In Las Vegas PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 12 March 2007
Team Australia NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose has qualified in a strong 14th position for the Sam’s Town 300 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada today.

Ambrose drove the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion to a seventh row starting spot for the fourth NASCAR Busch Series race of the season, finishing as the top rookie and second fastest non-Nextel Cup driver in the process.

The Australian driver has driven at the reconfigured Las Vegas Motor Speedway on two occasions previously, finishing seventh in last season’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at the venue as well as turning in top 10 times in preseason testing at the 1.5-mile oval.

Earlier in the day Ambrose put the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion through its paces in three practice sessions. The Australian was 23rd fastest in opening practice, second in the second session for rookie drivers and 30th fastest in final practice.

Defending Busch Series Champion Kevin Harvick qualified on pole for tomorrow’s Sam’s Town 300 ahead of David Stremme and Reed Sorenson.

“We are happy with this result for qualifying here in Las Vegas,” said Ambrose.

“We had a strong car today and we turned in two solid laps in qualifying. We probably left a little bit out there on the race track but we didn’t want to push it too hard. This is a good spot for us especially being the second fastest non-Cup driver.

“This is my first qualifying run on a real handling sort of oval in a Busch car so it’s good to be up this far in what is a quality field.

“The race is going to be a different story tomorrow. We’ve qualified here at night and the race will be in the heat of the day tomorrow. With all the heat in the track it will be a different track with less grip, so it could be a hectic first half of the race with some accidents to look out for before the field sorts it self out.

“I’ll be focussed on running around and staying out of trouble and keeping it safe until the first pit stop. I think we can have a strong car for the second half of the race and see where we come out.”
